Buddhist meditation plays a fundamental role in cultivating concentration, mindfulness, and wisdom. Nevertheless, drowsiness (thīna-middha) remains one of the most common obstacles that diminishes the effectiveness of meditation practice. This study aims to analyze the strategies implemented by the administrators of Nalanda Cetiya to address drowsiness during meditation classes at Nalanda Institute. A qualitative case study design was employed. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with meditation administrators and participants, and document analysis, followed by thematic analysis involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that drowsiness arises from both physiological factors, including fatigue and insufficient rest, and psychological factors, such as declining alertness and boredom during meditation sessions. The strategies adopted include changing from sitting meditation to walking meditation, improving body posture, strengthening mindful breathing, washing the face, and allowing adequate rest when physical exhaustion becomes unavoidable. These findings indicate that effective management of drowsiness requires an integrated approach combining physical readiness with the cultivation of mindful awareness in accordance with Buddhist principles. The study contributes practical insights for improving meditation class management and strengthening meditation training programs in Buddhist educational institutions.
