Pelestarian Ritus pada Masyarakat Adat Baduy di Kampung Legok Jeruk, Desa Kanekes, Lebak, Banten

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the rituals practiced by the Baduy indigenous community in Kampung Legok Jeruk, Desa Kanekes, and to understand the social and spiritual meanings embedded within them. The research employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and community members, and documentation of customary activities. The data were analyzed inductively by emphasizing the perspectives of the Baduy community as the subjects of the study. The findings indicate that the rituals practiced by the Baduy community include marriage, pregnancy, circumcision, and death rituals. Each ritual is governed by strict customary rules and contains profound symbolic meanings. The marriage ritual reinforces the monogamous system and strengthens social solidarity. The pregnancy ritual serves as a form of protection for both mother and child through the kendit ceremony and various customary taboos. The circumcision ritual marks the transition to adulthood and is conducted communally. Meanwhile, the death ritual reflects the Baduy worldview that perceives death as a natural cycle of life and a spiritual journey toward the ancestors. Overall, these rituals function not only as traditions but also as social and spiritual mechanisms that maintain harmony between humans, nature, and the sacred realm. The preservation of these rituals demonstrates the Baduy community’s consistency in maintaining their customary values and cultural identity amid modern developments.
